Ardhanarishvara Shiva Shakti Newari Paubha Thangka – Old Oil-Varnished Sacred Art
This is an original, old oil-varnished Newari Paubha Thangka painting depicting Ardhanarishvara, the divine union of Shiva and Shakti. Hand-painted on handmade cotton canvas using natural stone pigments, this sacred artwork reflects deep spiritual meaning and traditional Newar craftsmanship from the Kathmandu Valley.
Because Paubha and Thangka paintings are traditionally made with water-based pigments, a thin oil varnish was applied long ago to protect the surface, improve durability, and impart a warm, aged character. This varnish adds a soft glow and gentle patina, enhancing its antique feel.
Meaning of Ardhanarishvara (Explained Simply)
The Sanskrit word Ardhanarishvara means “half male, half female.”
The figure is divided equally down the center:
Right half – Shiva: represents consciousness, stillness, and wisdom
Left half – Shakti (Parvati): represents energy, creation, and movement
Together, they symbolize the perfect balance of masculine and feminine forces in the universe, known as Purusha and Prakriti. This union teaches that creation exists only when both energies work together. Neither is complete alone.
Ardhanarishvara reminds us that balance, harmony, and unity are the foundation of all life.
