This original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicts the powerful and symbolic figures of Citipati, known as the Dancing Skeletons and protectors of sacred tantric teachings.
Citipati are called the Lord and Lady of the Charnel Grounds. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, they represent the truth of impermanence — the reminder that life, death, and rebirth are part of the natural cycle of existence. Their joyful dance symbolizes freedom from fear and attachment.
These powerful guardians are closely connected with the practices of Vajrayogini and serve as protectors of the Dharma. Their dancing skeleton form teaches practitioners to overcome ego, illusion, and fear of death.
This Thangka is carefully hand-painted on handmade cotton canvas using traditional Himalayan techniques. Natural pigments, gold dust, and Tibetan hide glue create strong colors and long-lasting detail. The artwork is mounted with silk brocade, making it ready for display.
Cultural Significance
Citipati figures are also seen in traditional Cham dances performed by monks during sacred festivals. Wearing elaborate skeleton costumes, the dancers move to ritual music, representing the cycle of life and the victory of wisdom over ignorance.
This Thangka carries both artistic beauty and deep spiritual symbolism.
