This is an original hand-painted Buddha Amitayus Tibetan Thangka painting elegantly bordered with silk. Amitayus, also known as Aparmita, is the name of Buddha Amitabha in his Bestower of Longevity aspect. He is a celestial Buddha or a fully realized Bodhisattva who attained Buddhahood by accumulating infinite merit over countless past lives. According to the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life, Aparmita created a pure heavenly realm through his good deeds, where he now resides with his countless divine disciples, enjoying boundless and endless life. He promises that if any faithful person calls upon him at their death, he will appear with many blessed sages and deliver them to his Pure Land, where they can live free from suffering and death in the light of the Dharma.
In this, Amitayus Thangka, Aparmita, Amitayus, or Tsepame sits in perfect tranquility with his hands in Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation. His posture expresses his mastery over the world of appearance through enlightenment, signifying the enlightened state of mind for which samsara and nirvana are one. His palms lie face up in his lap, holding the ambrosia treasure vase, his unique emblem. The vase contains amrita, the elixir of awakening and immortality. It is adorned with leaves of Ashoka, a sacred flowering tree, symbolizing Aparmita’s compassionate gift of a long life free from sickness and suffering.
