Original Hand-Painted Citipati (Dancing Skeleton) Tibetan Thangka – Unique Artwork
This is a genuinely unique, hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicting the Citipati, also known as the “Lord and Lady of the Charnel Grounds.” This large-sized masterpiece is painted with care and detail on handmade cotton canvas, making it a one-of-a-kind piece of sacred Himalayan art.
The Citipati are powerful Dharma protectors in the Vajrayogini tantric tradition. Their origin comes from the meditation practices of Indian Mahasiddhas in charnel grounds, where practitioners confronted impermanence amidst cremation grounds and remains. Though striking in form, these dancing skeletons are not symbols of fear—they represent the Buddhist truth of impermanence and the transformation of awareness.
Beyond their tantric symbolism, the Citipati also hold a vibrant role in Tibetan culture. They are famously performed in Cham dances at monasteries, where monks dressed in elaborate skeleton costumes dance to traditional Tibetan instruments. These dances are joyful, rhythmic, and deeply spiritual, reflecting both celebration and teaching.
✨ This Thangka captures that dual essence—cheerful yet profound—making it a rare artwork that bridges tantric practice, cultural heritage, and Buddhist philosophy. Perfect for collectors, practitioners, or anyone seeking an extraordinary reminder of life’s impermanence.
