YELLOW DZAMBHALA / KUBERA – THE WEALTH DEITY
This is an original, hand-painted, Oil-Varnished Kubera/Jambhala Tibetan Thangka. Kubera is a god of wealth whose blessings remove the obstacles of poverty, bringing wealth and abundance to those who practice pure Dharma. As it is difficult to attain spiritual realizations while afflicted by a lack of resources, Dzambhala generates prosperity, allowing practitioners to have the time, energy, and means to accomplish them. According to the Sutras, one day, while Shakyamuni Buddha was teaching, demons attempted to disturb and confuse the Buddha. Dzambhala appeared before the Buddha and protected him. Recognizing Dzambhala’s courageous action, the Buddha asked Dzambhala if he would like to become a Dharma Protector to help all sentient beings. Dzambhala accepted the Buddha’s offer, and since then, he has offered immediate assistance to all who call his name or chant his mantra. His blessings bestow good luck, increase virtues, prolong life, increase intelligence, and provide both material and spiritual benefits.
GESTURES AND ATTRIBUTES
There are five Dzambhalas – yellow, white, black, green, and red – of which yellow is the most common form. Each form has its special significance and attributes.
Yellow Dzambala / Kubera is depicted adorned with a crown, silk garments, and beautiful gold and jeweled ornaments. He is seated imperially upon a throne, with a bijapuraka
(citron) fruit in his right hand and a mongoose in his left hand. The mongoose constantly spews forth precious jewels and treasures and represents Dzambhala’s victory over the nagas.
WHAT IS AN OIL-VARNISHED THANGKA?
An oil-varnished thangka painting is a unique style of thangka, a traditional Buddhist religious painting, typically found in Tibet and other Himalayan regions. Unlike traditional thangkas, which use natural pigments mixed with a binder, oil-varnished thangkas are created using oil-based paints.
The process of creating an oil-varnished thangka involves using oil paints to create intricate images of Buddhist deities, scenes, or mandalas on a canvas or wooden panel. After the painting is completed, it is then coated with a layer of varnish, which not only enhances the colors and details but also provides protection to the artwork.
Oil-varnished thangkas often display vibrant colors and have a distinct shine due to the varnish layer. The use of oil paints enables a higher level of detail and shading, lending these thangkas a unique aesthetic appeal compared to traditional watercolor-based thangkas. However, both styles hold significant cultural and religious significance and are valued for their spiritual representation in Buddhist practices.
