This is an original, hand-painted Newari Paubha (Thangka) Painting of Mahakali / Kali, the fierce goddess of universal power, time, life, death, rebirth, and liberation.

Mahakali devours Kala (Time) itself and then returns to her primordial, formless state. She is the consort of Mahakala, the god of consciousness — the very foundation of reality and existence. In Sanskrit, Mahakali is the feminine form of Mahakala (“Great Time”), an epithet also associated with Shiva or Narasimha.

Paubha art is the traditional sacred painting style of the Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley. Like Tibetan Thangkas, these paintings are used for meditation, ritual practice, and spiritual contemplation. This artwork is a stunning example of fine Himalayan craftsmanship.
