According to the ancient Swayambhu Purana, the Kathmandu Valley was once a vast lake. Manjushree saw a glowing lotus on the lake and cut a passage at Chovar with his flaming sword, letting the water drain. The lotus settled on the hill that became Swayambhunath Stupa, making the valley suitable for human life. This Thangka beautifully reflects his role as a creator, protector, and guide of wisdom.
