This Orgyen Menla Thangka is an original, hand-painted Tibetan Buddhist artwork depicting Guru Rinpoche in his healing form, also known as the Medicine Guru. Within the Dudjom Tersar lineage, Orgyen Menla represents the external aspect of the Lama, and the associated healing practice is known as Orgyen Menla Dütsi Bum Zang.
Orgyen Menla embodies the enlightened healing power of Guru Padmasambhava. He appears calm yet powerful, radiating compassion, wisdom, and medicinal energy that supports both physical and spiritual healing.
In this painting, Orgyen Menla has a deep blue complexion, like blue beryl, symbolizing supreme healing wisdom. He sits in a relaxed royal posture on a colorful lotus and white moon disc, rising from a sacred lake. His posture reflects stability, generosity, and awakened presence.
His clothing carries deep symbolic meaning:
The white inner garment represents the Mahayana path
The blue robe symbolizes the Mantrayana path
The patched orange robe represents monastic discipline
The dark maroon cloak shows mastery of all paths to enlightenment
He wears the iconic lotus hat of Guru Rinpoche, adorned with the sun and moon, a half-vajra, silk ribbons, and a vulture feather—symbols of wisdom, skillful means, and unshakable realization.
His right hand is in the mudra of supreme generosity, holding the myrobalan plant, the sacred medicinal fruit known in Tibetan medicine as a universal remedy. His left hand rests in meditation mudra, holding a skull cup filled with six myrobalan fruits, representing healing nectar and longevity. He also holds the tantric khatvanga staff, symbolizing the union of wisdom and compassion.
This Thangka is carefully painted on handmade cotton canvas using traditional stone pigments and Tibetan hide glue. It is framed with high-quality silk brocade, making it ready for altar display or wall hanging.
