Namgyalma, known as the Crowned Mother Buddha, is depicted in this Thangka painting with an aura of divine grace and symbolism. She embodies a serene and powerful presence as a female Bodhisattva with three faces and eight arms, revered for her association with longevity and the eradication of adversities.
Her central face and arms, radiantly white, signify the dispelling of calamities and troubles. Adorned with eyes on either side of her forehead and a twisting coronal atop her crown, she exudes a sense of omniscience and compassionate vigilance. According to the sutra's specifications, her form is that of a 16-year-old maiden, with half her hair elegantly braided while the remaining cascades, the tips extending beyond her elbows. Her countenance mirrors the subtlety of sesame, while her eyes resemble the delicate petals of a red lotus.
The symbolic significance of her three faces further unfolds in the Thangka. The left-facing yellow face symbolizes prosperity and longevity, while the right-facing blue countenance embodies the triumph over malevolent forces and demons.
In her eight arms, Namgyalma holds sacred items. Her main arms grasp a double Dorje and a rope, signifying her authority and ability to bind adversities. Her third hand, facing forward, gestures in a granting manner to fulfill the desires of her devotees. On her left, one hand uplifts in a gesture of assurance, while another wields a bow, and the third delicately holds an Amrita-Kalash with a blossoming flower—a representation of spiritual nourishment.
Followers of Buddhism are encouraged by the scriptures to venerate Namgyalma as a compassionate Bodhisattva capable of dispelling sorrows and troubles. Engaging in the practices associated with her can potentially extend life spans, augment happiness and wisdom, cleanse sins, and provide protection against malevolent influences and omens. The Thangka serves not only as a beautiful representation of this revered deity but also as a focal point for meditation and devotion, invoking the divine qualities embodied by Namgyalma."
