This original hand-painted Palden Lhamo Thangka is a masterwork, created on handmade cotton canvas and framed in rich silk brocade. Palden Lhamo (Sanskrit: Shri Devi) is the fierce protector goddess of Tibet, revered as the primary guardian deity of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. She is honored as the personal protectress of the Dalai Lamas, Panchen Lamas, and Lhasa itself.
In this Thangka, Palden Lhamo is shown riding her white mule side-saddle across a sea of blood, in the distinctive nakthang style. Her mule bears the arrow mark from her enraged husband, while her saddle blanket is made from her own son’s flayed skin—a powerful symbol of transcendence. She wears a garland of severed heads and sits within blazing flames, radiating protective power.
Her attendants accompany her—the Makara-headed dakini Makaravaktra, leading the way, and the lion-headed dakini Simhavaktra, following behind. A crescent moon, peacock feather jewel, and sun mark her divine body, while her mule is adorned with vipers and carries gifts from the gods, including her dice for Tibetan divination (mo).
Palden Lhamo’s wrathful yet compassionate form is not meant to instill fear, but to protect practitioners and the Buddhist path of compassion. This Thangka captures her unique energy—both fierce and profoundly protective—making it a powerful centerpiece for meditation, devotion, or collection.
