This Tibetan Thangka masterpiece uniquely portrays the Simhamukhi/Simhamukha Vajrayogini, also known as the Lion-Faced Dakini. Her black body, contrasting with her white lion face with three round yellow eyes, creates a striking and captivating image. Her open mouth, revealing a yellow beard, eyebrows, and upward-flowing hair, adds to her unique features. She holds a curved knife called Kartika in her right hand, raised to the sky, and a skull cup of blood to her heart with her left hand.

Simhamukha carries a Khatvanga staff, tipped with a trident, in the bend of her elbow supported against the shoulder. Her attire, a profound reflection of her essence, is equally unique. She wears a tiara adorned with five skulls, symbolizing the transcendence of the five poisons. Her elephant skin represents the subjugation of ignorance, while her bone ornaments signify the transformation of death. A long snake, a red scarf, and a necklace of fifty freshly severed heads complete her ensemble, each item carrying its symbolic weight. She wears a skirt made of tiger skin and stands on her left leg with her right leg bent upwards. She tramples on a double triangle symbol, a corpse, the sun, and a multi-colored lotus seat. Simhamukha represents great fierceness and resides in a blazing fire of pristine awareness.

Simhamukha, also known as Simha Mukhi Jogini, appears in a wrathful and demonic feminine form. However, it's crucial to understand that her nature is not evil or sinister. Instead, her wrathful aspect (khro gzugs) is a skillful means to overcome and subdue violent negative energies. Simha Mukhi is a Jnana Dakini, or wisdom goddess, playing a significant role in Vajrayana Buddhism. Her presence and symbolism are integral to the understanding and practicing this profound spiritual tradition, offering a beacon of wisdom and strength in the face of adversity.
