Hand-Painted Large Vajrakilaya Thangka – Wrathful Tibetan Deity, Oil Varnished Vintage Art
This is a large, hand-painted Tibetan thangka depicting Vajrakilaya. Vajrakilaya is a formidable, wrathful deity from the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. His role is to eliminate obstacles and negative energies, allowing individuals to progress on their spiritual journey.
This oil-varnished thangka of Vajrakilaya, also known as Phurbakilaya, is painted on handmade cotton canvas. It invites you to enter the divine realm of Vajrakilaya, the revered Tantric meditation deity honored by practitioners of the Nyingma tradition. The profound practices associated with Vajrakilaya are powerful means of removing barriers, dispelling hostile forces, and purifying one's spiritual path.
The teachings of the Vajrakilaya Tantra were initially imparted by Guru Padmasambhava to his closest disciples to overcome challenges to the spread of Buddhadharma in Tibet. Vajrakilaya is depicted with three heads, six arms, and four legs. In his primary hand, he holds his consort, Khorlo Gyedunma, and brandishes the magical phurba dagger. The lower blade represents skillful means, while the upper handle embodies wisdom. The tri-edged blade symbolically severs the root delusions of hatred, ignorance, and attachment, leading to the realization of emptiness.
In Vajrakilaya’s right hand, he grasps five- and nine-pronged vajras, showcasing his indestructible power. His left hand holds a flaming triple wish-fulfilling jewel and a trident, symbolizing the abandonment of delusion across the three realms. Adorned with elephant skin across his back, Vajrakilaya signifies the renunciation of self-grasping ignorance, while the diagonal human skin reflects the conquest of self-cherishing ego. A tiger-skin loincloth represents the abandonment of hatred, and a necklace of severed human heads signifies the transcendence of ordinary appearances and conceptions.
Embraced by Vajrakilaya, his consort Khorlo Gyedunma wears a crown adorned with five human skulls, symbolizing the purification of the five aggregates. Holding a skull cup filled with the blood of the four maras, she signifies the experience of the clear light of bliss and the triumph over uncontrollable death. Together, they stand in a warrior’s pose, surrounded by a blazing fire of exalted wisdom, annihilating delusions and consuming negative states of mind.
Explore the profound symbolism and spiritual essence embodied by Vajrakilaya and Khorlo Gyedunma in this remarkable artwork.
