This is an original hand-painted White Mahakala Tibetan Thangka Painting, brocaded with high-quality silk material and varnished with oil for protection and to enhance its visual appeal. This divine thangka represents White Mahakala, also known as Kala Bhairava, a figure of great reverence in both Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism.
Mahakala is a fierce manifestation that shares characteristics with Lord Vishnu in Buddhism and is viewed as a combined fierce form of Shiva and Vishnu in Hinduism. As a guardian deity, Mahakala is known as the consort of the goddess Mahakali and is depicted in various forms, each highlighting distinct qualities and aspects. In Hinduism, he is also recognized as Kala Bhairava or Mahakala Bhairava, with numerous temples in Nepal dedicated to this deity.
The depiction of the White Mahakala, specifically known as the Six-Armed Mahakala, revered by the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism, holds particular significance. This aspect is celebrated as the wish-granting Mahakala and is associated with supporting the prosperity and economic well-being of tantric practitioners. The White Mahakala is venerated for wealth attainment, with an iconography rich in symbolism reflecting his exalted status. His skull bowl, for instance, contains many jewels instead of mortal remains, symbolizing his ability to grant wishes and bring wealth. Similarly, his crown is adorned with five jewels rather than the customary five skulls, representing his divine status.
The White Mahakala, distinguished by his white-hued body, displays a ferocious and wrathful countenance adorned with three piercing eyes. His main right hand cradles a wish-fulfilling flaming jewel (Chintamani) atop a jewel-tipped handle before his chest. His upper right hand also wields a Vajra-marked chopper, while his lower right hand holds a drum with streaming ribbons. The main left arm gracefully rests on his left thigh, grasping a skull cup overflowing with jewels. Meanwhile, his upper left hand clasps a trident-tipped Khatvanga staff, and his lower left hand holds a Vajra hook. Adorned with silk scarves, an elephant skin cloak, a garland of freshly severed human hands, and a tiger skin covering his lower body, the Six-Armed White Mahakala is lavishly ornamented with exquisitely designed gold earrings, necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and girdles. Notably, his skirt is intricately painted and embellished with gold, highlighting his two prominent eyes, a flaming mustache, and beard, which showcase a mesmerizing and divine aesthetic.
