This is an original hand-painted masterpiece of Machig Labdrön, also known in Tibetan as Ahdron Chodron, one of the most revered female masters in the history of Tibetan Buddhism.
Renowned as a reincarnation of Yeshe Tsogyal, Machig Labdrön was the 11th-century yogini who founded the unique Chöd practice, a powerful meditation that “cuts through” ego-clinging and fear through the offering of one’s own body as a gesture of compassion and liberation.
Her life was a radical synthesis of Prajnaparamita wisdom, tantric guru yoga, and uncompromising realization. Unlike her male Indian contemporaries, Machig was both a Tibetan and a woman, defying convention to become one of the most influential lineage founders of Vajrayana Buddhism.
Symbolism and Story
Born with the sacred syllable “AH” on her forehead — a mark of the enlightened dakini — Machig’s childhood was filled with signs of spiritual genius.
Gifted with profound memory, she could recite the Prajnaparamita Sutra by age eight.
As she matured, she encountered deep realizations on impermanence and compassion, abandoning comfort and status to live among outcasts, embodying the fearless essence of the Chöd path.
In a pivotal vision, Machig offered her own body to fierce nagas in an act of ultimate generosity — transforming hostility into devotion. This moment birthed the heart of Chöd practice: feeding one’s demons instead of fighting them, thus dissolving ego and fear into wisdom.
