This original hand-painted Thangka portrays Machig Labdron, one of the most remarkable women in Tibetan Buddhist history. Beautifully mounted in traditional silk brocade, the painting honors a teacher whose life and teachings became the foundation of the Tibetan Chod tradition.

Unlike many Buddhist lineages that reached Tibet from India, the Chod tradition associated with Machig Labdron developed in Tibet and later spread beyond it. This gives her an exceptional place in Himalayan Buddhist history.

Her story is not simply one of religious achievement. She was a scholar, practitioner, yogini, teacher, mother, wanderer, and lineage holder. Her life challenged many expectations of her time and continues to inspire Buddhist practitioners centuries later.

Machig Labdron and the Chod Tradition

Machig Labdron lived in Tibet around the eleventh and twelfth centuries. From an early age, she became known for her remarkable ability to read and recite the Prajnaparamita teachings, particularly the Perfection of Wisdom literature.

Her spiritual development eventually moved beyond scholarship and recitation toward direct examination of the nature of mind.

This transformation became central to the teachings for which she is remembered.

Machig developed and transmitted Chod, a Vajrayana practice deeply influenced by the Prajnaparamita teachings on emptiness. The Tibetan word Chod means cutting through.

What is being cut is not an external enemy. The practice targets attachment to the self, fear, clinging, and the habits that sustain suffering.

Facing Fear Rather Than Escaping It

One distinctive quality of Chod practice is its approach to fear.

Traditional practitioners sometimes meditated in isolated or frightening locations, including wilderness areas and charnel grounds. Such environments provided an opportunity to confront attachment and fear rather than avoid them.

The deeper purpose was transformation of the practitioner‘s relationship with the ego.

Machig taught that the obstacles we experience cannot always be overcome by fighting against them. Through wisdom and compassion, even difficult experiences can become part of the path toward awakening.

A Woman Who Became a Lineage Master

Machig Labdron occupies an unusual position in Buddhist history. At a time when most prominent teachers and lineage holders were men, she became recognized as an accomplished female Buddhist master whose teachings developed into an enduring tradition.

She combined intellectual understanding of the Perfection of Wisdom teachings with direct contemplative experience.

Her life therefore represents more than historical importance. For many practitioners, she remains an example of independence, courage, insight, and the possibility of realization regardless of gender or social position.

Artistic Character

This Thangka is hand-painted on cotton canvas using natural stone colors and traditional Himalayan painting methods.

The relatively intimate size of the inner painting keeps the portrait of Machig Labdron as the visual focus, while the larger traditional silk brocade creates an elegant presentation around the sacred image.

The finished piece works equally well as devotional Buddhist art and as a distinctive addition to a collection devoted to Tibetan history, female spiritual masters, Vajrayana Buddhism, or Himalayan culture.
