Maha Maya/ Mayadevi/Queen of Kapilvastu Giving Birth to Buddha under Sal Tree Newari Paubha Painting Original Masterpiece Buddhist Art
The beautiful artwork is a rare example of a Newari Paubha Painting, meticulously painted on unique handmade cotton canvas. It depicts Mayadevi, the revered mother of Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in Lumbini, Nepal.
The painting depicts Mayadevi giving birth to Buddha under a Sal tree. The story goes like this: After ten lunar months, feeling that the time of birth was near, she went to the Lumbini grove outside Kapilavastu. While she stood upright and held onto the branch of a Sal tree (in the posture adopted by mothers of all Buddhas), the child came forth from under her right arm.
The teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, also called Shakyamuni Buddha, were highly influential and laid the foundation for Buddhism. This adds cultural and historical value to the artwork and enriches our comprehension of Buddhist art and culture.
