This original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicts Manjushri (Jampelyang) — the Bodhisattva of Divine Wisdom. Revered as the embodiment of insight, clarity, and enlightened intellect, Manjushri holds a sacred place in Tibetan Buddhism.
He is known as the “God of Divine Wisdom,” and devotees believe that meditating on or worshiping Manjushri brings wisdom, eloquence, and intelligence. Artists have intricately captured his serene presence and symbolic attributes, making this piece not only visually captivating but spiritually profound.
Spiritual Significance
In this Thangka, Manjushri is depicted seated gracefully on a lotus throne, symbolizing purity and enlightenment.
His flaming sword represents the power of wisdom to cut through ignorance.
His left hand holds the lotus stem supporting the Prajnaparamita Sutra — the “Perfection of Wisdom,” symbolizing supreme knowledge.
According to the Swayambhu Purana, Manjushri played a vital role in shaping the Kathmandu Valley. He is said to have drained the ancient lake by cutting the Chovar Gorge, making the land habitable and revealing the sacred Swayambhunath Stupa, the self-arisen light of wisdom.
This Thangka beautifully captures both his spiritual might and his historical significance in Nepalese Buddhist culture.
