Cultural Significance
According to the Swayambhu Purana, the Kathmandu Valley was once a great lake. Manjushri used his sword of wisdom to cut open the gorge at Chovar, draining the waters and creating the valley. The lotus that rested in the center became the Swayambhunath Stupa, one of Nepal’s most sacred Buddhist sites.
