This original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicts Four-Armed Avalokiteshvara, known in Tibetan as Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Painted on handmade cotton canvas using natural stone pigments, the artwork is finished with traditional oil varnish and mounted in new silk brocade.

Four-Armed Chenrezig

Chenrezig is one of the most revered Bodhisattvas in Tibetan Buddhism and represents boundless compassion for all sentient beings.

In this four-armed form, his central hands are joined near his heart and traditionally hold the wish-fulfilling jewel. His other hands hold sacred objects such as the lotus and prayer beads, representing purity, wisdom, and continuous compassionate activity.

The four arms symbolize the far-reaching nature of enlightened compassion and the ability to work for the benefit of countless beings.

Chenrezig is closely associated with the sacred six-syllable mantra:

Om Mani Padme Hum

This mantra is among the most widely recited in Tibetan Buddhism and is traditionally associated with cultivating compassion and progressing along the path toward awakening.

Oil-Varnished Finish

This Thangka has a traditional oil-varnished surface. The varnish adds warmth and depth to the natural pigments with a subtle sheen while providing an extra protective layer over the painting.

The appearance of an oil-varnished painting can vary depending on lighting and viewing angle, giving the artwork distinctive depth and character.

Traditional Himalayan Craftsmanship

Artisans hand-paint each painting on handmade cotton canvas using natural stone pigments and traditional Himalayan painting techniques.

It is mounted in new traditional silk brocade, giving the artwork the classic presentation of a Tibetan Buddhist Thangka.

This Chenrezig Thangka suits a Buddhist altar, meditation room, Dharma center, Vajrayana practice space, or collection of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist art.
