This is an original, old oil-varnished Tibetan Thangka painting of Vajrasattva, a highly revered deity in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Known as the “Diamond Being” or “Thunderbolt Being,” Vajrasattva represents purification, wisdom, and enlightened clarity.
In the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasattva appears as the devoted disciple of Vairocana Buddha, guiding practitioners into the mandala teachings. He inquires about the need for ritual and form to access truth, receiving profound instructions that have shaped Tantric Buddhist practice for centuries.
In Newar Buddhism, Vajrasattva is revered as the ideal guru and is invoked in many purification rituals. In Tibetan Buddhism, the practice of Vajrasattva plays a vital role in clearing karmic obscurations, purifying broken samaya vows, and cultivating the foundation for higher Vajrayana practices. He is also recognized as the second patriarch in Shingon Buddhism, symbolizing the transmission of esoteric wisdom.
