The Jambhala/Kubera Newari Paubha/ Pauva Thangka painting is a hand-painted masterpiece. Jambhala/Kubera is a god of wealth who removes the obstacle of poverty and brings wealth and abundance to pure Dharma practitioners. This is important because it is difficult to attain spiritual realizations while afflicted by a lack of resources. According to the Sutras, while Shakyamuni Buddha was teaching one day, demons tried to disturb and confuse the Buddha. Jambhala appeared in front of the Buddha and protected him. The Buddha, recognizing Jambhala's courageous action, asked him if he would like to become a Dharma Protector to help all sentient beings. Jambhala accepted the Buddha's offer, and since then, he has offered immediate assistance to all who call his name or chant his mantra. His blessings bestow good luck, increase virtues, prolong life, increase intelligence, and provide material and spiritual benefits.
Among the five Dzambhalas- yellow, white, black, green, and red- the Yellow Dzambala/Kubera form stands out with its unique attributes. This form, depicted adorned with a crown, silk garments, and beautiful gold and jeweled ornaments, is seated imperially upon a throne. He holds a bijapuraka (citron) fruit in his right hand and a mongoose in his left. The mongoose, a constant source of precious jewels and treasures, symbolizes Dzambhala's victory over the nagas, adding to the intrigue and depth of this form.
Newari Paubha, a traditional art form that originated in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, is a style of religious painting that portrays deities, religious scenes, and mandalas. Known for their detailed designs, vibrant colors, and use of gold leaf, Newari Paubha paintings are often used as devotional objects in religious ceremonies and festivals. These artworks hold great cultural and religious significance within the Newari community and are rich in symbolism.
