This piece of art is an original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka of Simhamukhi (Simhamukha) Vajrayogini, also known as the Lion-Faced Dakini. She is one of the powerful goddesses in Vajrayana Buddhism and is known for her wisdom, strength, and protective energy.
Simhamukhi has a black body and a white lion face with three bright yellow eyes. Her open mouth reveals her strong expression, and her yellow eyebrows, beard, and flowing hair make her look fierce and energetic. She holds a curved knife (Kartika) in her right hand, raised toward the sky, and a skull cup filled with blood in her left hand near her heart.
She carries a Khatvanga staff with a trident tip on her shoulder. Her crown with five skulls symbolizes freedom from the five poisons: anger, pride, ignorance, desire, and jealousy. The elephant skin around her shows victory over ignorance, and her bone ornaments symbolize transformation and wisdom. She wears a tiger skin skirt, a snake garland, and a necklace of fifty human heads, each representing purified emotions and wisdom.
Simhamukhi stands on her left leg, with the right leg bent upward, on a corpse, a double triangle symbol, the sun, and a lotus seat. Every part of this Thangka painting carries deep symbolic meaning from Tibetan Buddhism.
Though she looks fierce, Simhamukhi’s power is not evil. Her wrathful form represents the power to destroy negative forces and ignorance. She is a wisdom Dakini, protecting truth and helping practitioners find inner strength, clarity, and courage.
This Thangka is a spiritual masterpiece — hand-painted on handmade cotton canvas with natural stone and gold pigments. It is ideal for meditation, altar display, or as a collector’s piece of sacred Himalayan art.
