This is an original, hand-painted masterpiece art of the Six-Armed Mahākāla, also known as Kāla Bhairava, in the form of a Tibetan Thangka painting. Mahākāla is a deity found in both Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism. In Buddhism, Mahākāla is regarded as a fierce form of the divine, while in Hinduism, he is understood as a powerful manifestation of both Shiva and Vishnu, and he is often depicted as the consort of the goddess Mahakali.
Mahākāla is considered a guardian deity and is represented in various forms, each embodying distinct qualities and characteristics. In Hinduism, he is also referred to as Kala Bhairava or Mahākāla Bhairava. There are numerous Mahākāla temples located throughout Nepal.
The two-armed "Black-Cloaked Mahākāla" is a protector of the Karma Kagyu school, clad in the cloak of a māntrika, or "warlock".
His imagery derives from the terma of the Nyingma school and was adopted by the Karma Kagyu during the time of Karma Pakshi, 2nd Karmapa Lama.
He is often depicted with his consort, Rangjung Gyalmo. He is usually regarded as the primary protector, but he is, in fact, the primary protector of the Karmapas specifically.
Four-Armed Mahākāla is technically the primary protector. Six-Armed Mahākāla is also a common Dharmapala in the Kagyu school.
