This original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka painting depicts Vajravarahi, also known as Dorje Phagmo. Vajravarahi represents complete Buddhahood in female form, and her practices are linked to the Chakrasamvara Cycle of Anuttarayoga Tantra. Although her practice is present in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism, she is primarily associated with the Kagyu tradition.
Vajravarahi is a powerful figure, and offering prayers to her image can help establish a connection with her and cultivate seeds of enlightenment within our minds. Her image can pacify our immediate surroundings, clear negative energy, and protect us from harmful influences.
Vajravarahi's gestures and attributes include holding a cemetery knife in her right hand and a skull cup in her left. In the crook of her left elbow, she carries a Khatvanga staff. Her two legs are positioned in a celestial dancing posture on a human corpse. She is often depicted with a sow's head at her side, symbolizing the triumph of dharma over ignorance.
This is an old oil-varnished Thangka. Applying oil to a Thangka painting enhances its durability and visual appeal. This traditional practice helps protect the watercolor painting.
Measuring 34 x 45 inches (86 x 114 cm) with silk brocade and featuring an inner painting size of 14 x 19 inches (36 x 48 cm), this Thangka is not just a piece of art but a portal for meditation and spiritual connectivity. Each brushstroke captures the essence of devotion, inviting introspection and contemplation.
