Vajrapani is one of the earliest bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. He serves as the protector and guide of Gautama Buddha and represents the Buddha's power. He is also referred to as Chana Dorji and Chador and is prominently depicted in Buddhist iconography as one of the three protective deities surrounding the Buddha. Each deity symbolizes one of the Buddha's virtues: Manjushri embodies wisdom, Avalokiteśvara embodies immense compassion, and Vajrapāni protects the Buddha and embodies the power of all five tathāgatas (Buddhas).

Vajrapāni is considered one of the earliest Dharmapalas of Mahayana Buddhism and is revered as a deity in the Pali Canon of the Theravada school. He is worshipped in various Buddhist traditions, including the Shaolin Monastery, Tibetan Buddhism, and Pure Land Buddhism, where he is known as Mahasthamaprapta and forms a triad with Amitābha and Avalokiteśvara. Additionally, manifestations of Vajrapāni can be found in many Buddhist temples in China, Taiwan, and Japan, serving as Dharma protectors guarding monasteries and temple gates. Vajrapāni is also associated with Acala, where he is recognized as the vajra holder.

OIL-VARNISHED THANGKA
An oil-varnished thangka painting is a unique traditional Buddhist religious painting style typically found in Tibet and other Himalayan regions. Unlike traditional thangkas, which use natural pigments mixed with a binder, oil-varnished thangkas are created using oil-based paints.

Creating an oil-varnished thangka involves using oil paints to create intricate images of Buddhist deities, scenes, or mandalas on a canvas or wooden panel. After the painting is completed, it is coated with a layer of varnish, enhancing the colors and details and protecting the artwork.

Due to the varnish layer, oil-varnished thangkas often display vibrant colors and distinct shine. Oil paints allow for a different level of detail and shading, giving these thangkas a unique aesthetic appeal compared to traditional watercolor-based thangkas. However, both styles hold significant cultural and religious significance and are valued for their spiritual representation in Buddhist practices.
