This semi-old Wheel of Life (Bhavachakra) Thangka is a profound and meticulously hand-painted masterpiece that captures one of the most meaningful symbolic compositions in Tibetan Buddhism. Rich in gold and deep red hues, this artwork serves as both a teaching tool and a meditation aid — revealing the entire cycle of existence and the path to liberation from suffering.
Created using natural stone pigments, gold dust, and oil varnish on handmade cotton canvas, this Thangka radiates both spiritual energy and artistic mastery. Every section carries sacred symbolism that mirrors the Buddha’s profound teachings on karma, rebirth, and enlightenment.
🌀 Central Circle – The Core of Samsara
At the very center of the Thangka lies the three animals — a pig, a rooster, and a snake — chasing one another in a circle.
The Pig represents ignorance (avidyā).
The Rooster symbolizes desire and attachment (rāga).
The Snake signifies hatred and aversion (dveṣa).
These three are the “Three Poisons” that drive the endless cycle of rebirth (samsara).
🔄 Second Circle – Karma in Motion
Surrounding the center is a ring divided into two halves:
The bright half depicts beings ascending toward higher realms, symbolizing virtuous actions and positive karma.
The dark half shows beings descending into lower realms due to harmful actions — symbolizing ignorance and negative karma.
This ring represents the Law of Cause and Effect, the moral foundation of Buddhist thought.
🌍 Third Circle – The Six Realms of Existence
The large circular band illustrates the Six Realms of Samsara, the worlds into which beings are reborn according to their karma:
Deva Realm (Gods) – The realm of bliss, but also of complacency, where beings enjoy luxury yet fail to recognize impermanence.
Asura Realm (Jealous Demigods) – A world of power and envy, where beings are consumed by rivalry and ego.
Human Realm – The most balanced realm, where wisdom and compassion can lead to enlightenment.
Animal Realm – Dominated by ignorance and survival instincts.
Hungry Ghost Realm (Preta) – Beings with insatiable desires and suffering from endless hunger and thirst.
Hell Realm – The lowest plane, filled with pain and anguish born of hatred and harmful deeds.
In each realm, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas appear to guide sentient beings toward awakening.
🧘♂️ Upper Section – The Buddha and Liberation
Above the wheel, Lord Buddha is shown standing gracefully, pointing toward the moon, a symbol of Nirvana — the state beyond birth, death, and suffering. This gesture reminds us that liberation from samsara is possible through wisdom, compassion, and correct understanding.
😈 Outer Rim – Yama, the Lord of Death
The wheel is encased by the powerful image of Yama, the Lord of Death, with a fierce face and fiery hair, holding the entire Wheel of Life in his grasp.
His crown of skulls symbolizes impermanence and the inevitability of death.
His glaring eyes represent the awareness that all conditioned phenomena are transient.
Yama is not an evil figure but a guardian of the truth of impermanence — reminding practitioners to awaken before life passes.
🌸 Lower Section – The Cycle’s Origin and the Path
At the base, you’ll find intricate depictions of natural landscapes, clouds, flames, and water, symbolizing the constant transformation of the elements. These lower motifs also represent the karmic seeds that sustain the cycle of existence.
