Shakyamuni, also known as Gautama Buddha, is the historical Buddha and the root teacher of all Buddhist traditions. His life and teachings form the foundation of Buddhism.

The Meaning of “Buddha”

The word Buddha means “the awakened one.” It refers to a person who has fully realized truth and awakened from ignorance. While many Buddhas exist in Buddhist tradition, Shakyamuni Buddha is the historical teacher who lived in ancient Nepal and India.

The Life of Shakyamuni Buddha

Born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama in the Shakya clan of ancient Nepal, he lived a protected royal life. In his late twenties, he encountered sickness, old age, and death. These experiences deeply moved him.

He renounced his palace life in search of truth. After years of meditation and discipline, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. From that moment, he became the Buddha — “the awakened one.”

For the rest of his life, he taught the path to liberation from suffering. At around 80 years of age, he entered Nirvana, the state beyond birth and death.

About the Shakya Clan

The name Shakyamuni means “Sage of the Shakya.” Siddhartha belonged to the Shakya clan, a historical community in ancient Nepal. His decision to renounce royal life shows the depth of his sacrifice in seeking enlightenment.
