Thousand Armed Avalokiteshvara Thangka | Sahasrabhuja Chenrezig Hand-Painted Tibetan Buddhist Art

This is an original, hand-painted Tibetan Sahasrabhuja Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara Thangka, a masterwork of sacred Buddhist art. Painted on handmade cotton canvas using traditional methods, this Thangka represents Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), the Bodhisattva of Compassion and one of the most revered figures in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism.

Avalokiteshvara embodies limitless compassion. According to tradition, he vowed not to enter Nirvana until all beings are freed from suffering. When the burden of suffering became overwhelming, his body shattered into a thousand pieces. Buddha Amitabha restored him, granting him eleven heads to hear the cries of beings and one thousand arms, each with an eye in the palm, symbolizing the perfect union of wisdom and compassionate action.

In this Thangka, the eleven faces are arranged in tiers, crowned by Buddha Amitabha at the top. The thousand arms radiate outward, each eye representing awakened awareness. His two main hands are joined at the heart in devotion to Amitabha, while the other principal hands hold sacred objects such as a lotus, a crystal rosary, a Dharma wheel, a bow and arrow, and a water pot. A deer skin draped over his shoulder symbolizes gentle compassion.

Above the central figure appear the Five Dhyani Buddhas (Pancha Buddhas) — Vairocana, Akshobhya, Amitabha, Ratnasambhava, and Amoghasiddhi — representing the five wisdom qualities of enlightenment. In the lower section are powerful protectors, including White Mahakala, Jambhala (Kubera), and Vajrapani, who symbolize protection, prosperity, and spiritual power.

This Thangka is not only a sacred image but also a profound aid for meditation. It is traditionally associated with the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum”, believed to awaken compassion, reduce suffering, and guide the practitioner toward enlightenment.
