Vajrapāni, the Thunder Bearer, is one of the earliest bodhisattvas to appear in Mahayana Buddhism. He stands as the protector and guide of Gautama Buddha, symbolizing the unshakable power of all Buddhas. Also known as Chana Dorji or Chador, Vajrapāni is traditionally depicted as one of the three great protective deities surrounding the Buddha.

Each of these three figures embodies a core Buddha virtue:

Manjushri – wisdom of all Buddhas

Avalokiteśvara – boundless compassion

Vajrapāni – protective power and strength

Vajrapāni is also among the earliest Dharmapalas (protectors of the Dharma) in Mahayana Buddhism. His worship extends beyond Tibet — he is venerated in Shaolin Monastery, Tibetan Buddhism, and Pure Land Buddhism, where he is known as Mahasthamaprapta, forming a sacred triad with Amitābha and Avalokiteśvara. Statues and paintings of Vajrapāni are found in Buddhist temples across China, Taiwan, and Japan, where he guards monastery gates and protects practitioners from obstacles.

This authentic hand-painted Thangka depicts Vajrapāni in bold gold and natural tones, elegantly framed with traditional silk brocade, making it both a sacred object and a stunning piece of art.
