This White Tara Thangka Painting is an exquisite hand-painted masterpiece that embodies divine grace, healing, and longevity. Painted by skilled Newar artists using natural stone pigments and pure gold, it reflects both spiritual depth and masterful artistry.
White Tara (Sita Tara), known as the Mother of Compassion, is revered in Tibetan and Newar Buddhism for her boundless mercy and her power to bestow long life, peace, and protection.
🌸 Main Deity – White Tara
At the center of the composition sits White Tara, radiant and serene, seated gracefully upon a pink lotus.
Her seven eyes — on her palms, soles, forehead, and face — symbolize her omniscient awareness and compassion, which watch over all beings.
She holds a blue lotus (Utpala) in her left hand, representing purity and wisdom blooming amidst the challenges of the world.
Her right hand is in the gesture of supreme generosity (Varada Mudra), offering blessings and compassion to all beings.
The golden aureole and halo behind her signify enlightenment and divine purity.
🌺 Upper Section – Red Amitabha Buddha
Above White Tara, you can see Amitabha Buddha, her spiritual mentor, seated upon a lotus throne. He embodies boundless light and guides her in her compassionate activities.
On both sides, celestial musicians and attendants play instruments among golden clouds, symbolizing divine celebration and harmony in the heavenly realms.
🌿 Lower Section – Devotees and Guardians
At the bottom right, a blue guardian figure kneels in devotion — representing the protector of the teachings and the vanquisher of obstacles.
On the lower left, another bodhisattva-like attendant holds a lotus, symbolizing assistance and reverence toward the Goddess.
Below them, lush landscapes, flowing rivers, and animals such as deer and birds enrich the earthly realm — representing peace, balance, and the interconnection of life.
🌼 Surrounding Details
The background flora — full of peonies, lotus, and foliage — symbolizes growth, fertility, and the flourishing of compassion.
The rich golden patterns across her robes and ornaments showcase the Newari artists’ mastery of fine linework and sacred geometry.
The soft shading and balanced symmetry create a tranquil energy suitable for meditation or temple worship.
