This is a Master-Quality Thangka Painting of Yamanaka, also known as Vajravairabha. In this painting, Yamanaka is depicted alongside his consort, Vajravetali, the wrathful form of Goddess Saraswati. Yamanaka represents a fierce manifestation of the Bodhisattva Manjushri and serves as a Dharmapala (guardian of the Dharma).

Yamanaka, characterized by his buffalo head, is recognized as a guardian deity in Buddhism. He took on this fearsome form to defeat Yama, the lord of death, who was disrupting the cycle of karma by claiming souls before their time had come. By presenting a form even more terrifying than Yama’s, Yamanaka was able to intimidate him, reflecting Yama’s own monstrous appearance.

Eventually, Yama repented for his actions and transformed into a guardian of the Dharma. Yamanaka is portrayed with seven angry heads, a large buffalo head at the center, and additional features including a top head representing another fierce aspect. He has nine faces, thirty-four hands, and sixteen legs.
