This original Tibetan Thangka depicts Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and is finished with a traditional oil varnish to protect the painting and impart a subtle sheen.

Guru Padmasambhava, the great 8th-century tantric master, played a central role in establishing Buddhism in Tibet. Invited by King Trisong Detsen, he subdued local spirits, bound them to protect the Dharma, and introduced powerful Vajrayana teachings. He is especially revered in the Nyingma tradition and is believed to remain compassionately engaged with sentient beings.

In this Thangka, Guru Rinpoche appears in his classic form, holding a vajra (ultimate truth) and a skull cup, symbolizing realization and longevity. The khatvanga staff represents his consort, Mandarava, and his mastery over the three realms. His sun-and-moon hat symbolizes the union of wisdom and skillful means.
