When encountered by sentient beings, this light has the power to cleanse their defilements, leading them to emancipation at the end of their lives in his Pure Land, Sukhavati.
In the painting, Amitabha is depicted in the Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation, with both palms facing up and resting in his lap. This posture symbolizes his mastery over the world of appearance through enlightenment and his enlightened state of mind where samsara and nirvana are one.
