This is an original hand-painted Amitabha Buddha masterpiece, a Tibetan Thangka painting framed with silk brocade. The Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life states that Amitabha's greatness surpasses that of all other exalted beings, earning him the title of the Buddha of all Buddhas. Buddha Shakyamuni once noted Amitabha, “The magnificent radiance of his light is beyond exhaustive description, even if I were to praise it continuously, day and night, for a whole Kalpa.”
Amitabha Buddha resides in a pure celestial realm, created through the power of his infinite merits accumulated over countless lifetimes as a Bodhisattva. His light shines brilliantly from this heavenly realm, illuminating the entire universe. According to the Sutra, when sentient beings encounter his light, their defilements are removed; by seeing his light, they are enabled to find relief and freedom from suffering. At the end of their lives, those who have faith in Amitabha are granted rebirth in his Pure Land, leading them to emancipation. As Shakyamuni explains, “Sentient beings who are born in that Buddha-land all reside among those assured of nirvana.”
Amitabha is often depicted in the Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation, with both palms facing upward and resting in his lap. His right hand, positioned on top, symbolizes the state of enlightenment, while his left hand, resting below, represents the world of appearance. This posture conveys Amitabha’s mastery over the world of appearance through enlightenment, signifying the enlightened state of mind where samsara and nirvana are unified. In some representations, he holds the traditional begging bowl of an ordained Buddhist monk, which is filled with amrita—the elixir of awakening and immortality. This bowl symbolizes Amitabha’s infinite openness and receptivity toward all sentient beings.
