Among the Bodhisattvas, he has the most diverse forms and is highly esteemed by many Buddhists. Although initially depicted as masculine, some Chinese and Japanese traditions portray him as feminine. However, there is no evidence to support gender discrimination. In China and Japan, Avalokiteshvara is often worshipped as the "mother of the human race" and is represented in female form.

Oil-varnished thangkas are a unique style of traditional Buddhist painting found in the Himalayan regions. Unlike traditional thangkas, they use oil-based paints.
