Shakyamuni, also known as Gautama Buddha, is regarded as the Buddha of our time and is a pivotal teacher in the various Buddhist lineages. He was born Siddhartha Gautama and was the prince of the Shakya kingdom in the Himalayan foothills, now known as southern Nepal. He abandoned his life of luxury in search of the truth about suffering and the end of fear. He achieved enlightenment through his remarkable courage, determination, wisdom, and compassion despite facing immense challenges. His teachings have profoundly impacted individuals and nations worldwide and are still relevant today.

In depictions, the Buddha is shown with his right hand extended to the ground in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, known as the witness gesture. This represents him "calling the earth to witness" his triumph over the temptations and illusions of the material world, as symbolized by the demon Mara. His left hand rests on his lap, and his palm faces upward in the meditation gesture (Dhyana Mudra). In some representations, he also holds the begging bowl of a Buddhist monk, which contains three precious nectars, symbolizing his victory over the three demons of uncontrolled death, contaminated aggregates, and delusion. This posture is often known as "Buddha Shakyamuni Conquering the Demons," representing the moment of the Buddha's full enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.
