Avalokiteshvara, also known as Chenrezig, embodies the enlightened compassion of all Buddhas. He is considered the earthly incarnation of the celestial Buddha Amitabha. He is a guardian of our world during the period between the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, and the future Buddha, Maitreya. Universally cherished across all branches of Buddhism, Chenrezig is recognized as the patron Bodhisattva of Tibet. His mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hum," is well-known even in non-Buddhist countries. Chenrezig made a courageous vow to assist all living beings, pledging that he would continue his work for their benefit if even one being remained trapped in samsara. His wisdom, compassion, and endurance are boundless, and he is especially revered for helping those who meditate on him achieve realization and spiritual attainment.
**Gestures and Attributes**
In his four-armed form, Chenrezig symbolizes a whirlwind of constant activity in the world. Two of his hands are pressed together at his heart, holding the wish-fulfilling enlightenment jewel, the Chintamani. This jewel is capable of manifesting whatever a devoted seeker may wish for and also represents the profound teachings and virtues of the Buddha. The clasped hands position further expresses his gratitude and respect for Buddha Amitabha.
He holds a crystal mala, or Buddhist rosary, which he continuously counts in his upper right hand, symbolizing his relentless, compassionate activity. He has a beautiful lotus flower in full bloom in his upper left hand. Just as the lotus emerges pure and radiant from dark, muddy waters, Chenrezig manifests amidst the misery and suffering of our world while remaining unstained by samsaric conditions. His blossoming lotus inspires us to unfold the pure compassion of our true natures, even amidst the challenges of worldly existence.
**Symbolism**
To Chenrezig's left, at the level of his heart, is the gentle face of a wild deer, with the deerskin draped over his shoulder. The deerskin is an ancient symbol of renunciation, as wandering mendicants often used it as a meditation seat or as a garment and blanket. This symbolism applies to Chenrezig, a Bodhisattva who has renounced the traps of worldly existence; it also signifies his boundless compassion for sentient beings. According to legend, Chenrezig once took rebirth as a wild deer and, moved by his compassion for the hunter who pursued him, willingly laid down his life.
