This original, hand-painted masterpiece is an oil-varnished Hindu-Buddhist Thangka, a rare and highly revered artwork. This exquisite piece depicts Chinnamasta, a Hindu goddess known for her severed head. She is one of the Mahavidyas, the ten goddesses of the esoteric Tantra tradition, and embodies a fierce aspect of Mahadevi, the Great Goddess in Hinduism.
The self-decapitated, nude goddess is typically portrayed standing or seated on a divine couple engaged in copulation, symbolizing the union of opposites. In one hand, she holds her severed head, while in the other, she wields a scimitar. From her neck, three jets of blood spurt, feeding her severed head and two attendants. This imagery encapsulates the dual nature of Chhinnamasta: she is both a giver of life and a taker of life.
Chhinnamasta’s iconography is rich with symbolism. Depending on one's interpretation, she is a powerful representation of sexual self-control and an embodiment of potent sexual energy. She signifies both death and life, as well as temporality and destruction, and also immortality and rebirth. The goddess is a profound emblem of spiritual self-realization and the awakening of kundalini, the dormant spiritual energy within.
The legends surrounding Chhinnamasta highlight her themes of self-sacrifice, often intertwined with maternal elements, sexual dominance, and self-destructive fury. This painting captures the essence of her mythology and spiritual significance, making it a compelling and thought-provoking masterpiece that invites contemplation on the nature of existence and the divine.
