Mother goddess Chundi / Chandi
Chandi is a revered goddess, conceived as the embodiment of the mother principle and associated with the cult of the Mother Goddess, or Shakti. This divine power is integral to the creation and governance of the universe. The Mother Goddess personifies primordial energy and is seen as the source of all divine and cosmic evolution. Hence, she is identified with the Supreme Being, acting as both the origin and controller of all natural forces and potentialities. It is this Shakti that energizes the divine, making gods active and effective.
There are various names and forms of Shakti, one of which is Chandi. The Mahabharata highlights different epithets for goddesses such as Shakti, Durga, Uma, Parvati, Chandi, Kali, and Mahakali. Additionally, the Devimahatmya elaborates on the greatness of Goddess Chandi. The cult of Shakti enjoys vast popularity, especially in the tantric traditions of Tibet, Nepal, and other regions.
Goddess Chandi possesses the power to protect beings from suffering and harm, vanquishing evil spirits and bestowing peace and prosperity. Her reverence dates back to ancient times. Images of Chandi depict both her peaceful and wrathful aspects. Many representations show her with eight or eighteen arms. The current beautiful depiction of Goddess Chandi shows her in a peaceful aspect, seated in vajraparyankasana on a lotus that emerges from a lake.
