**Guru Rinpoche / Padmasambhava – Precious Master Thangka Painting**

Buddhism was first introduced to Tibet in the eighth century when King Trisong Detsen invited the Indian master Santaraksita to teach the sacred Dharma to the Tibetan people. Upon his arrival, Santaraksita, alongside the king, began building the first monastery. However, they faced numerous obstacles created by resentful mountain spirits. Realizing that they needed the help of a realized master with control over physical reality, the king invited Guru Padmasambhava to tame the angry spirits of Tibet.

Regarded as an emanation of Buddha Amitabha, Guru Padmasambhava was miraculously born from a lotus blossom in Oddiyana, which is present-day Pakistan. He was widely known for his miraculous powers, including his ability to subdue spirits. At the king's request, Guru Padmasambhava journeyed to Tibet and engaged the local nature spirits in magical combat. He conquered these spirits and bound them by oath to protect the Dharma for all time. Evidence of his victories can still be seen throughout the valleys and villages of Tibet, where he is affectionately known as "Guru Padmasambhava," meaning "Precious Master."

Together, the king, Santaraksita, and Guru Padmasambhava worked to establish Buddhism in Tibet. The king founded temples, Santaraksita ordained monks, and Guru Padmasambhava operated on a more mystical level. He established the secret and powerful practices of Tantric Buddhism and imparted profound teachings to his closest disciples, including the king. Foreseeing a future king who would attempt to destroy Tibetan Buddhism, Guru Padmasambhava concealed religious treasures throughout the Himalayan region. These treasures would be revealed centuries later by seers destined to discover them.

Guru Padmasambhava did not die; instead, he is believed to have flown away with his consort on the sun's rays. Many, especially those in the Nyingma school that traces its lineage directly to him, believe that he is still alive and remains full of compassion for all sentient beings. Dwelling at the level of spontaneous presence, the great Guru has the power to bestow blessings instantly and grant wishes immediately. He continues to be a deeply special focus of practice for many in Tibet.
