This is an original, hand-painted, oil-varnished Tibetan Kubera (Dzambhala/Jambhala) Thangka. Kubera, the Tibetan Buddhist god of wealth, is revered for removing obstacles to prosperity and bringing abundance to sincere Dharma practitioners. Because attaining spiritual realizations without sufficient resources can be challenging, Dzambhala’s energy supports prosperity, providing practitioners with the time, energy, and means to achieve their spiritual and worldly goals.

According to the sutras, while Shakyamuni Buddha was teaching one day, demons attempted to disturb and confuse him. Dzambhala appeared before the Buddha and protected him. Recognizing his courageous action, the Buddha asked whether he would like to become a Dharma Protector to assist all sentient beings. Dzambhala accepted the Buddha’s offer and, since then, has been known to provide swift assistance to anyone who calls upon his name or chants his mantra. His blessings are believed to bring good luck, increase virtues, prolong life, enhance intelligence, and provide both material and spiritual benefits.

Gestures and Attributes
There are traditionally five forms of Dzambhala: yellow, white, black, green, and red. Yellow Dzambhala is the most common and widely revered form, and each color manifestation carries distinct significance and attributes.

In this thangka, Yellow Dzambhala/Kubera is depicted wearing a crown, elegant silk garments, and gold and jeweled ornaments. He sits regally upon a throne, holding a bijapuraka (citron) fruit in his right hand and a mongoose in his left hand. The mongoose continuously spews precious jewels and treasures, symbolizing Dzambhala’s victory over the nagas and his power to bestow wealth and good fortune.

This artwork is ideal for a home altar, meditation room, spiritual décor, or as a special gift for practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism and those seeking prosperity and protection.

What is an Oil-Varnished Thangka?
An oil-varnished thangka is a distinctive style of traditional Buddhist religious painting found in Tibet and other Himalayan regions. Unlike traditional thangkas that use natural pigments mixed with a binder (often in a watercolor or gouache style), oil-varnished thangkas are created with oil-based paints.
The process involves painting intricate images of Buddhist deities, scenes, or mandalas on handmade cotton canvas (or wooden panels) using oil paints. Once the painting is complete, it is coated with a protective layer of varnish. This varnish enhances color and fine detail, adds a subtle sheen, and helps protect the artwork over time.

Oil-varnished thangkas often feature:

Vibrant, saturated colors
A distinct shine from the varnish layer
Greater depth, shading, and detail, thanks to the qualities of oil paints

While stylistically different from traditional mineral-pigment thangkas, both forms hold deep cultural and religious significance and are highly valued for their spiritual power and beauty in Buddhist practice.
