This is an authentic, hand-painted Tibetan Thangka Painting of Mahakala or Kala Bhairabha. It is framed with high-quality silk brocade and depicts the Black Mahakala, a semi-wrathful deity with six arms. This deity is revered for his compassion towards all sentient beings and his ability to protect the teachings and those who study them from harm and evil forces.
Mahakal is often depicted in various forms, including the Black aspect, wearing a crown of five skulls representing the transformation of the five poisons into wisdom. He stands on the corpse of the elephant-headed god Ganesh, indicating his ability to overcome obstacles. His black color signifies his role in destroying evil and obstructions on the spiritual path. He is considered a fierce and wrathful aspect of Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of Compassion.
Mahakal has six arms, symbolizing his mastery of the six perfections of a Bodhisattva, and his two feet represent wisdom and method. He holds a rosary of human skulls in his upper right hand, which he uses to benefit sentient beings. In his lower right hand, he has a ritual drum or damaru. His upper left-hand holds a trident, indicating his abandonment of the three realms' delusions. He holds a lasso in his lower left hand, symbolizing his power to bind demons and evil forces. His two primary hands hold a ritual curved knife and a skull bowl, representing his ability to sever the root of delusion and his realization of emptiness, respectively.
