**MANJUSHREE / JAMPELYANG – THE BODHISATTVA OF WISDOM**

Manjushree, also known as Jampelyang, embodies the all-encompassing wisdom of enlightenment—the wisdom that reveals the true nature of reality. He can discern correct from incorrect views and identify beneficial versus non-beneficial actions on one’s spiritual journey. Manjushree bestows intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, mastery of teachings, eloquence, and memory. His name means "gentle glory," and he is particularly revered in Nepal, where it is said that he played a key role in the establishment of civilization in the Kathmandu Valley. Additionally, Manjushree is the patron Bodhisattva of the Kadampa (or Gelugpa) order of Tibetan Buddhism, well-known for its esteemed scholars, called geshes.

**GESTURES AND ATTRIBUTES**

Manjushree’s left hand is in the Vitarka Mudra, the gesture that represents teaching and intellectual discussion. On this hand, he also holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports the Prajnaparamita, or the Perfection of Wisdom sutra. In his right hand, he wields a flaming sword, symbolizing the power of discerning wisdom to cut through ignorance, which is the root of all suffering. Manjushree, in this sword-wielding pose, embodies the courage and effort required to achieve freedom.
