**GANESH – THE REMOVER OF ALL OBSTACLES**

Ganesh is the most popular guardian deity worshipped in Nepal by both Hindus and Buddhists. Numerous independent temples dedicated to Ganesh can be found in the Kathmandu Valley. He is regarded as the deity who removes obstacles. To begin any auspicious work or enterprise, the people of Nepal worship Ganesh with the hope of accomplishing their tasks successfully by averting any potential difficulties. The form of Ganesh, or Ganapati, is described in sacred texts like the Sadhanamala and Nispannayogavali.

**GESTURES AND ATTRIBUTES**

Ganapati rides a mouse and is depicted as white in color, with an elephant head. He wears a snake as his sacred thread and has four arms. In his two right hands, he holds a trident and a laddu (a sweet ball), while in his two left hands, he carries an axe and a radish. Ganesh is the son of Shiva and Parvati.

There is a notable story involving Ganesh and his brother Kartikeya. Once, Kartikeya challenged Ganesh to circumambulate the world, with the winner to be worshipped first by the people. Kartikeya traveled the world on his peacock multiple times and was about to report this to Lord Shiva and Parvati. Meanwhile, Ganesh realized that he could not circumambulate the world on his small vehicle, the mouse, so he devised a clever plan. He simply walked around Lord Shiva and Parvati three times, thereby winning the challenge.

The Ganesh mantra is "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha" (ॐ गं गणपतये नमः), which translates to “My salutations to Lord Ganesha.” This mantra is used to invoke the blessings of Ganapati and seek his peace, knowledge, and prosperity.
