This is an original hand-painted masterpiece, the Shakyamuni Buddha Tibetan Thangka painting. Thangka paintings, a traditional form of Tibetan Buddhist art, are typically painted with gold and natural colors, showcasing high precision and artistic detail. The Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka painting is a prime example of this art form.
Buddha Shakyamuni, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is the Buddha of the present time. He is the esteemed root teacher of the diverse lineages that comprise Buddhism. Initially named Siddhartha Gautama, he was the crown prince of the Shakya kingdom, located in the Himalayan foothills of southern Nepal. He renounced a life of luxury in pursuit of the truth about the origin of suffering and the cessation of fear. His unwavering bravery, steadfast resolve, profound insight, and empathy enabled him to achieve ultimate enlightenment, even in the face of seemingly impossible challenges. His teachings have had a profoundly transformative impact on individuals and nations worldwide, and they continue to resonate with us today.
The Thangka painting depicts the Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, a gesture of witness, with his right hand extended to the earth. This gesture symbolizes his victory over the temptations and illusions of the material world, represented by the demon Mara. In his left hand, he holds the begging bowl of an ordained Buddhist monk in a meditative gesture. The bowl contains three precious nectars, symbolizing his victory over the three demons of uncontrolled death, contaminated aggregates, and delusion. The demon of uncontrolled death represents the fear of death, the demon of contaminated aggregates symbolizes the illusion of a permanent self, and the demon of delusion signifies ignorance. This posture, known as 'Buddha Shakyamuni Conquering the Demons,' represents the moment of the Buddha's full enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.
