Hand-Painted Wheel of Life Thangka - Bhavachakra Samsara Mandala with Buddha Life Story, Oil Varnished Tibetan Art

This is a real hand-painted Tibetan thangka called the Wheel of Life, or Bhavachakra. It shows the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth in a big circle. The painting has oil varnish on top to protect it and make the colors shine.
The Wheel of Life helps people understand why we suffer and how to stop it. Buddhist monks use it to cultivate deep thought. You often see it on the walls of monasteries in the Himalayas.
A scary figure named Yama, the Lord of Death, holds the whole wheel in his teeth and claws. This reminds us that death comes to everyone.

At the top, outside the wheel, there is open sky. The Buddha points to it. This means we can get free from the cycle.

In the very center are three animals: a pig for not knowing the truth, a bird for wanting too much, and a snake for anger. They chase each other in a circle. This shows how these bad things feed each other.
The next layer shows karma – what you do comes back to you. One half is light for good actions. The other half is dark for bad actions. Then come six worlds we can be reborn into:

Higher worlds:

Human world – best for learning how to get free because life has some joy and some pain.
Demi-god world – full of fighting and jealousy.
God's world is full of fun, but they forget to practice and fall later.

Lower worlds:
4. Hell world – full of terrible pain and torture.
5. Hungry ghost world – always hungry and thirsty, nothing helps.
6. Animal world – full of fear, eating, or being eaten.
Sometimes a Buddha figure is in each world trying to help.
The outer ring has twelve pictures. They show the steps that keep us stuck in the cycle:

Blind person – not knowing.
Potter making pots – making actions.
Monkey grabbing fruit – mind jumping.
People in a boat – body and name.
House with six windows – senses.
Lovers touching – contact.
Arrow in the eye – feeling pain or joy.
Person drinking – wanting more.
Monkey picking fruit – holding tight.
Couple together – making a new life.
Woman giving birth – being born.
The body is carried away – old age and death.

At the bottom, there is usually writing that says the Buddha showed the way out, but we have to do the work ourselves.

This thangka is excellent for meditation or learning about Buddhist ideas. It brings deep thoughts to any room.
