Inner Circle – The Three Poisons

At the center of the Wheel are three animals that represent the root causes of suffering:

Pig – Ignorance

Bird – Attachment and desire

Snake – Anger and hatred

The bird and snake emerge from the pig’s mouth, showing that attachment and anger arise from ignorance. They also hold the pig’s tail, showing how these poisons reinforce each other.

Second Circle – The Wheel of Karma

The next ring shows cause and effect:

The dark half depicts beings suffering from hostile actions.

The light half shows beings enjoying positive results and spiritual progress.

This teaches that our actions shape our future experiences.

The Six Realms of Samsara

The large outer section is divided into six realms of existence. All beings move through these realms again and again.

Higher Realms:

Human Realm
A balance of joy and suffering. This is the best place to practice the Dharma.

Semi-God Realm
Beings filled with jealousy and conflict, always fighting despite having power.

God Realm
Lives of pleasure and comfort, but wasted on distraction instead of wisdom.

Lower Realms:

Hell Realm
Extreme suffering caused by hatred and harmful actions.

Hungry Ghost Realm
Endless hunger and thirst symbolize uncontrolled desire.

Animal Realm
Life is driven by fear and survival, lacking awareness and insight.

In many depictions, a Buddha or Bodhisattva appears in each realm, offering guidance toward liberation.

Outer Ring – The Twelve Links of Dependent Origination

The outermost ring explains how beings remain trapped in Samsara through twelve stages:

Ignorance – a blind person

Mental formations – a potter

Consciousness – a monkey or a man grasping fruit

Name and form – people in a boat

Six senses – a house with six windows

Contact – lovers touching.

Feeling – an arrow in the eye

Craving – a person drinking

Grasping – picking fruit

Becoming – union or reflection

Birth – childbirth

Aging and death – a corpse

This cycle shows how suffering continues and how wisdom can stop it.
