This original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicts Vajrasattva, known in Tibetan as Dorje Sempa, an important meditation deity associated with purification in Vajrayana Buddhism. Painted in Nepal on handmade cotton canvas using natural stone pigments and gold, the artwork is finished with traditional oil varnish and mounted in silk brocade.

The oil-varnished finish enhances the depth and warmth of the natural pigments, adds subtle luster, and provides an additional protective surface.

Vajrasattva – Symbol of Purification

Vajrasattva, whose Sanskrit name translates as “Vajra Being,” is closely associated with purifying negative karma, obscurations, habitual patterns, and breaches of tantric commitments.

Vajrasattva practice has an especially important place in Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism and is commonly included in preliminary practices before undertaking more advanced meditation and tantric training.

Vajrasattva also holds an important place in other esoteric Buddhist traditions, including Nepal‘s Newar Buddhism and Japanese Shingon Buddhism.

Vajra and Bell Symbolism

Vajrasattva is traditionally depicted holding a vajra (dorje) in his right hand and a ritual bell (ghanta) in his left.

The vajra symbolizes the indestructible nature of awakened reality and compassionate method, while the bell represents wisdom and the realization of emptiness. Together, they symbolize the inseparable union of method and wisdom central to Vajrayana Buddhist practice.

His peaceful appearance represents purity, clarity, and the stainless nature of awakened mind.

Traditional Himalayan Craftsmanship

An artisan paints this Thangka by hand using natural stone pigments and gold on handmade cotton canvas. Fine brushwork, carefully balanced proportions, and detailed Buddhist iconography reflect traditional Himalayan Thangka painting techniques.

After painting, the artist oil-varnishes the surface to add warmth, depth, and protection. The completed artwork is mounted in traditional silk brocade, creating the classic presentation of a Tibetan Buddhist Thangka.

This Vajrasattva painting suits a Buddhist altar, meditation room, Dharma center, Vajrayana practice space, or collection of Tibetan and Himalayan sacred art.
