This is an old, original, hand-painted Tibetan Thangka showing Black Mahakala, also known as Mahankala. It is finished with traditional oil varnish and framed with classic silk brocade.

Mahakala is one of the eight great Dharma Protectors. He is known as the Protector of Wisdom. His role is to remove inner and outer obstacles that block spiritual growth. Though his form looks fierce, his nature is pure compassion.

In this painting, Mahakala wears a crown of five skulls. These show how anger, desire, pride, jealousy, and ignorance can be turned into wisdom. He stands on Ganesh's body, demonstrating his power to remove all obstacles. His black color stands for the destruction of negativity and harm.

Mahakala is seen as a wrathful form of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Many practitioners believe sincere prayers to him bring strong protection and support on the spiritual path.

This Thangka is painted on handmade cotton canvas using natural stone colors. The oil varnish protects the surface and gives the painting a deep, aged glow. The silk brocade frame makes it ready for display.
