This masterpiece Tibetan Thangka depicts Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), painted with luminous gold and natural stone pigments on handmade cotton canvas. Guru Padmasambhava is one of the most revered masters in the Vajrayana tradition, known as the “Second Buddha” for establishing Tantric Buddhism in Tibet in the 8th century.
🪷 Historical Background & Symbolism
When Indian master Santaraksita and King Trisong Detsen began building the first monastery in Tibet, local mountain spirits caused obstacles. Guru Padmasambhava, famed for his miraculous powers, was invited to Tibet.
Through magical battles, he subdued the spirits, binding them to protect the Dharma. This marked a turning point in Tibetan spiritual history.

Santaraksita ordained the first monks.
Guru Rinpoche established Tantric Buddhism with his teachings and practices.
